Just Chill: Snow Days at Northview

  1. Pajamas inside out...and backwards!
  2. Ice cubes down the toilet. It has been debated whether it should be a single ice cube or a minimum of 6.
  3. A spoon under the pillow. Probably to be found months later when you are forced to clean your room!
  4. A white crayon placed in the freezer.
As four of the most popular snow day rituals, it is probable that you have tried one or all when wanting to catch up on some sleep, delay a project, or just hang out. The question is: what really is the deciding factor on if we have a snow day or not?

Northview superintendent Dr. Scott Korpak says the first thing considered is the ability of the buses to travel safely. Second is will students be able to reach their bus stops?

This is determined by transportation coordinator Betty Nelson and Director of Facilities Mark Fargo who are on the roads around 3:30-4:30am.  Around 5:00am Nelson and Fargo report road conditions back to Dr. Korpak who makes the final call. Korpak says the ability to salt and plow the roads in a timely manner is always taken into consideration.

The district of Northview is allowed as many snow days as necessary to keep students and staff safe. However, after the seventh snow day, days must be added to the school year.

Dr. Korpak wanted to remind students and families that parents may always choose to keep students at home when safety is a concern during questionable weather. “It is always there to have an excused absence because they deem the weather indecent to travel,” Korpak said, discussing the option of parents keeping kids at home in unsafe weather. “I just want to remind parents that they have the ability to do so.”

In this unpredictable Michigan weather, snow days are a commonality, whether we flush ice cubes down the toilet or put a spoon under a pillow. As new drivers, and young adults, it is something we need to be aware of. So be safe. Enjoy your snow days and the bliss of rolling over and going back to bed
