Eye Candy, Moonwalking, Brain-Children, and The "Rewind. Northview Back in Time" Concert

“What a bunch of overachievers we have here, huh?” said Rewind. Northview Back in Time host, Ryan Potts, while introducing yet another successful and ambitious former-Northview performer with spectacular musical credits. This past weekend, talented Northview choir alumni gathered to put on a series of performances and inadvertently show off how well they were making it in the world.

With performers ages ranging from anywhere between 25 years free from high school to only recently escaped, it must be expected that the songs they chose to sing were just as diverse as the lot themselves.

Tami Hjelm and self-proclaimed “eye-candy” Max Colley Jr. sang a romantic duet, called “Chances Are”. Jen Schaap and Ann Genter Stebleton, two graduates of 1995, performed an original, melancholic song titled, “Winter.” 2009 graduate, Andy Palma, executed an ever crowd-pleasing Disney song, “So Close” from the movie Enchanted.

Two 2012 graduates, Andrew VanOtteren and Anthony Murphy, put on a skit from the show “Producers,” and 2015 graduate, Trent Cummings, danced to Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean” made complete with Jackson’s famous moonwalk.

Since leaving high school some people have focused their attention on building upon their musical credits whereas others had focused more on building families, getting married and having kids. Most of the older alumni had a little bit of experience down both paths, but some of the newest alums, such as Lucas Story and Nate Morris, were only just beginning to figure out post-high school life.

Some former-Northview-goers strayed far from good ol’ Northview, going places such as Northern Michigan or Canada, and others stayed incredibly close to home, like Tammy Hjelm, the Crossroads Middle School choir teacher, and Greg Wells, the high school band director.

The idea for the concert can be accredited to Annette Sejat, the vocal music booster president. After four years, Sejat’s “brainchild” was finally brought into the world and the show was put on display.

Judging by the sound of the applause from the audience to each and every performer, it seems safe to say that the Rewind. Northview Back in Time concert was an accomplishment fit to make its brain-mother, the vocal music boosters, and all of the singers, musicians, and dancers truly proud.
