Quite a few years ago, on the night of graduation, there was a party in a field behind someone’s house. A student who had received his diploma that night attended this party, he drank too much and wandered into the road, where tragically he was hit and killed by a car. Just as his future was beginning, he lost everything due to careless drinking. In light of this event, his mom donated some money to Northview to start a branch of SADD, or Students Against Drunk Driving, which was what it was called at the time.
Since then, the SADD club has become an important part of Northview. According to Mr. Theodore(Ted) Burba, the club, which is now been named Students Against Destructive Decisions, is here to “help people in realizing what is important in life.” Their main goals are to bring awareness to texting and driving, and to help to “make prudent decisions about your sex life, alcohol, drugs, or anything that you [or others] could be harmed from.”
Three times a year, SADD runs a blood drive, from which they raise a little money. They give this money to charities, which are decided by the SADD presidents. This year, club presidents Alexis Voss and Bella Sanchez awarded money to Kid's Food Basket and St. John’s Home for Boys. Recently they also collected toys to give to the Marine Corps Reserve gift donation fundraiser Toys For Tots.
Through all of this, SADD has found a way to change lives, especially this holiday season. Mr. Ted Burba states, “We want people to realize that someone has problems worse than yours, and that if you can give them, a laugh, or a giggle, that may make their day.”
