Northview’s own liaison deputy, Andrew Kozal, was named Deputy of the Year for Kent County on May 4. For Kozal, this was an unexpected achievement, but for Northview High School Principal Mark Thomas, “This is kind of a validation of something that we’ve known.” Prior to the beginning of Kozal’s career at Northview, some of the faculty members of the high school felt that students would be concerned about a uniformed officer’s presence in the school. Kozal was hired during the summer of 2007, shifting his career from a patrol officer to the liaison deputy at Northview.
While Kozal’s role has evolved into guiding the safety and security advisory team for the entire district, the main goal of relationship building has remained the same. Kozal says “Every day is a new adventure.” He has been known to go in and teach in different classes, provide safety and security, speak with parents and students, and work with administration teams on different issues.
Throughout all of this Kozal has proven to be a great fit for the district. “He fits so well with our mindset here of how we want to interact with our students,” Thomas said. These years at Northview have led Kozal to become very involved in the district, from extracurricular activities like the summer high school police academy to relationship building with both teachers and students.
