Theo is a thirteen-year-old boy living in New York City. His parents are divorced and his father abandoned him. Theo and his mother go to an art museum to avoid walking through the rain. While they are looking at the painting, The Goldfinch, a bomb explodes. The explosion leaves Theo’s mother dead. As Theo struggles to get up, he sees an old man with fatal injuries. Theo goes over to the man, Welty, and tries to help him. Welty knows he is going to die, so he pulled Theo in and whispered a company’s name in his ear and slips a ring into his hand. Welty soon dies and Theo knows he has to escape the museum. On his way out he sees The Goldfinch hung on the wall, unharmed. Theo grabs the painting and slips it into his bag and abandons the museum. His actions in the museum will soon impact his life in many unexpected ways.

In this controversial novel, by Donna Tartt, the tough topics of drug and child abuse, depression, friendship, and loss are all major components of the storyline. Although The Goldfinch has received many mixed reviews, it is a must read. This book takes you on an unexpected journey through a boy’s life. The Pulitzer Prize winner will draw you in with it’s simple, easy to understand language and tragic events.
