The girls swim program wrapped up a successful season with a 7-5 meet record. Among the various other season achievements, two school records were broken, one by freshman Sarah Pataniczek, and the other by junior Lauren Bockheim. Pataniczek broke a 31 year old record in the 200 freestyle and Bockheim broke the 100 backstroke record, previously held by Maddie Waltman, one of the best backstrokers Northview ever had, and still holds school relay records. When asked about how it felt to break these records, “It feels like it’s not real” Bockheim said, “to know that I’m the fastest backstroker in school history is just weird.” Pataniczek felt more relief, “I was just glad it was over and that I didn’t have to swim it anymore.” She continued on to say that it didn’t seem like a big deal in the moment, which Bockheim agreed with. As for what they credit to their achievements, Bockheim believed it was her training lane, “it helped me to swim with Sarah and to try catch her feet every day.” Pataniczek credits the team dynamics for encouragement to swim fast. “It’s definitely easier to swim fast when you’re helping your team score points” she said.

Both girls admitted this was their best year thus far. In regards to future goals, Pataniczek plans on focusing in on the 100 individual medley (IM) and breaking the 100 freestyle record which she narrowly missed at state and confessed (she) “was disappointed about.” Bockheim intends to focus on backstroke with full force and see where it takes her, “it’s the nose plug” Pataniczek commented “probably” and Bockheim laughed. When asked if they considered swimming in college, both said if the opportunity arose they would be interested “I definitely would consider it” Pataniczek said. She continued on to say she would most likely go where ever she got the most money. Either way it is clear to see that these swimmers and the Northview program has a bright future ahead.
