Student Section Traditions

The football season has just come to an end, and with that, the student section has also come to a halt. Traditions are a big part of the student section. Year after year students cheer the same cheers at a certain point in the game; have grades sit in a specific order; and have clear-cut themes to dress up and follow in a definitive order during the season.

Traditions are things that happen every game or season, but this also offers little room for creativity in some themes. When asked what her least favorite tradition is, Alexus Voss, student section leader and senior class president, admitted she hated all of the basic themes that everyone else seems to love so much. Alexus claimed that when students bring up new ideas and stray from the norm, like introducing new creative themes, the student body generally acts negatively. Everyone freaks out and loses it because more work goes into it.
While there are some negative views on the traditions the student section has become accustomed to, there is also positive aspects as well. “I think it gives people something to look forward to other than just watching the football game and some people just hate football and they go,” student Gavin Webb said. Gavin believes that when we diverge from traditional themes, students often act negatively because there is a form to which we have become accustomed, and why change something that’s not broken? Gavin claims that the White Out, one of the student body’s more basic themes, is something that anyone can dress up to.
If there is one thing that people in the student body can agree on, it is that the student section makes Northview into more of a family. “It forms a family and common interest and something to look forward to every Friday night. Something that everyone can get involved in, no matter what grade you’re in” Webb said.
