As November rolls in and thoughts of big family meals and giving thanks float into many of our heads, Northview’s National Honor Society does their part to pay it forward to Grand Rapids’ less fortunate child population.
“Stuff the Bus” they call it, a chance for the Northview community to fill a bus full of grocery items for Kids Food Basket. The bus will be at the D&W fresh market, on the corner of the East Beltline & Knapp street, on November 19 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM collecting donations. When you go into the store you can pick up a shopping list of items. Then in addition to shopping for things that you need, you can pick one (or many!) of the items on the wish list to purchase and donate to Kids Food Basket, anything from chips and crackers, even cereal and Ziploc bags. These are all things that Kids Food Basket needs and the kids love. If you can't decide what to purchase, cash donations are also highly encouraged.
Volunteers from NHS will be by the doors collecting items purchased by the shoppers. Then member volunteers will bring all of the collected items onto a Northview school bus and attempt to “stuff the bus” with as many groceries as they can. When the deadline of 4:00 has been reached, the bus, along with its dedicated packers, head downtown to the KFB headquarters and unload all the goodies for the children in need.
In addition, Kids Food Basket delivers all their food in colorful lunch bags decorated by people all over West Michigan willing to give up a little of their time for the joy of kids in the surrounding areas. Northview High School is encouraged by the NHS to decorate these bags, and drop them off to your respective english teacher’s classroom in the designated collection boxes. The bags will also be delivered on November 19.Kelly Keen, student secretary if Northview’s NHS and coordinator of the event, encourages all to stop by and donate throughout the day. “This event is made possible by the generosity of the Northview community and all the shoppers and the store of D&W,” Keen said. So get out there Northview, and help all those kids in West Michigan faced with hunger, especially as the holiday season draws near.
