How to Be a Healthier Teen - Part 1

Many students at Northview dedicate themselves to living healthier
lives, as seen by the many students in the weight room each day.
Working out, eating fruits and veggies, even accomplishing the impossible, a full night of sleep, all means nothing without regularity. However, it can be extremely difficult for students, overwhelmed with work, sports, and homework, to keep up with being healthy.

Our own Jessie Brinks, the Northview athletic trainer and health teacher, has the answer.
“Setting and establishing a routine is a huge piece of it. Planning ahead is important too,” Brinks said on the subject of how to keep up with healthy habits. By bringing healthy snacks out with you instead of stopping for fast food, you can do a lot to stay healthy. The same is said for working out. If you make a schedule ahead of time to go running, you don’t even have to bother making time because you already have it scheduled into your day.

Motivation is the next hurdle in trying to have a healthy lifestyle. It can be fleeting. Setting achievable goals is an easy way to hold on to motivation. Preventing yourself from falling into the trap of bad habits is another.

“I know that it’s tough for young people, since they’re not as affected by these things now. But once healthy habits start to feel intrinsic to your daily life, it gets easier, and helps you stay healthy,” Brinks said in closing.

It is hard to carve out enough time in order to even begin to stay healthy as busy teenagers. But it’s the first step in leading a healthier life. Set your goals and stay confident. Don’t worry, once you’re stuck in the habits, all that’s left is what you do with those habits.
