Congratulations to Northview’s Benny Brewer and Brendan Smith who made MSBOA’s All-State band, and Haylee Ryder who received an honorable mention. Every year, over 2,000 students across the state of Michigan audition for one of 400 seats in Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association’s All-State ensembles. In January, students who made one of the five all All-State bands will rehearse for three days with conductors recognized from across the nation.

The students who make All-State band are strong musicians. Becoming great at something requires great dedication. Senior Brendan Smith has stuck with band because “the people are great and I have a huge passion for music.” Smith has been playing in band since 5th grade. He has played in many different ensembles, including All-State jazz band 2015 and 2016. Having experienced All-State band before, Smith is excited for the upcoming year. For talented musicians, All-State is a chance for them to challenge themselves and try something new. Smith says that it is enlightening to be surrounded by some of the best young musicians in the state, and he is thankful for the opportunity to perform with them.

Being selected into one of these ensembles is a great honor. To audition, students sign up for a 10 minute audition. The student’s audition is recorded and consists of a prepared piece, scales and sight-reading. The recording is then sent to judges who choose which members they think are best fit to be in the band. It was no easy feat to make All-State band. Congratulations again to Benny Brewer and Brendan Smith! These two musicians are being recognized on a state level, representing the best of Northview.
