How To: Spring Clean

By Maddie Miller

Michigan weather has been teasing us with a few, much appreciated, warm and sunny days. Hopefully, this means that the season of spring is not too far out. Along with blooming flowers and rain showers, another famous connotation of spring is the notorious spring cleaning. For some, they have been awaiting this time so they have an excuse to deep clean every room, sort through their closets, and organize everything (even their sock drawer).

Then, there are always people who hear about spring cleaning and don’t even bat an eye. This is understandable, as cleaning is not something that many people feel inclined to do. However, no matter how much you may dread the process of cleaning, the end product is undeniably better. Here are a few ways make spring cleaning a little less painful.

Before cleaning even begins, music can take any situation and make it less boring. Then, pull back your shades and let that natural light shine in. This is an almost foolproof way to make you less tired and improve your mood. Next, although hard to do, I promise it will make you more focused and efficient: avoid using your phone. The less time you spend snapchatting the fact that you are spring cleaning, the more progress you will make.

Now that you are as ready as can be, choose an area to clean. Ever since you were a little kid, “go clean your room” is a phrase ingrained into your brain. This may seem like a simple task, but it can be daunting to even know where to begin. Remember, you can only deal with one thing at a time, so choose one task. Take clothes as an example and do a sweep around your room. Wash the dirty clothes, and fold the clean. If you are feeling extra motivated, you can sort the clothing into a keep and a donate pile. Next, dispose of or recycle any trash laying around, including all of those random papers- you know the ones.

Once you have a room free of tangible dirtiness, you can begin piecing the puzzle together. With the remainder of the items scattered around your room, create piles in the general area of where they belong. Move to each pile around the room and put everything in its specific place. Finally, focus on the finishing details such as dusting, vacuuming, and making your bed. These final tasks are the most mundane, but they are the icing to the cleanliness cake.

The next free hour you have, consider taking that time to freshen up any area of your life that may need it. This includes your room, locker, backpack, car- literally anything. Join in on the act of spring cleaning, and you will soon realize why it exists.
