New classes come about each year at Northview. The 2017-2018 school year however, is getting a complete revamp in the math department.
Several math courses are gaining an advanced version, including Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus. A whole new class is even being added, known as College Algebra.
What the students need to know now though, is how these classes will affect them. It doesn’t seem the best to simply separate the students for the sake of better test scores, and it is entirely possible that these separated classes will simply put some kids farther behind than others. No one will learn the skills they need for college if we are making classies easier just so students can pass them.
However, according to Geometry and Precalculus teacher Matt Coty, this is the best possible thing for students at Northview.
“A few too many kids have been struggling. We want to give them a better chance,” Coty said.
It’s not about the test scores for Coty. It’s about teachers helping students the best that they can. In the previous math courses, if students were struggling more than others, it became increasingly difficult for teachers to help them when others were ready to move on. With the addition of the new math courses, supposedly teachers will be able to spend more time with students who need that extra help.
Coty also said that the new classes could help older students in their preparation for college. Many scholarships ask whether or not students took courses like advanced Precalculus, and College Algebra is the perfect choice for students who feel unready for Precalculus, but want to progress their skills.
Coty believes that these additions to the math department will be advantageous to all students. It will give them more options and a better shot at a great grade.
As to whether or not these classes will succeed in helping students the way teachers hope they will, the jury is still out.
