In recent news, the fashion industry has been slammed for underrepresenting certain types of models in their shows. But this mainstream trade is not the only place where diversity is a problem. Universities, workplaces, and social media platforms have all been accused of focusing their attention on a certain type of person, while forgetting that most humans do not fit in the box they construct. Throughout this social phenomenon, few companies and industries have risen to the challenge of accepting all people and creating a more diversely represented population.
Diversity is defined by variety or differences, like skin color or body size. All attributes of a person are unique to them, and they should always be accepted and valued. The importance of diversity is not only to represent all people, but to prove that our differences are what make us human.
“I think diversity is important because it opens up different opportunities for people to experience and show some cultural appreciation,” said junior Rosa Le.
Diversity itself has lessons to teach us all, like how to accept others for who they are and reject the social stigmas plastered on us from a young age. Differences are what make us unique and are what keep the world from becoming bland and boring. Love and acceptance of each other will only generate positivity in the world, which is something we all could use.
