Just a Resolution

This year I will work out more, I will make my bed every morning, I will eat healthier, I will.., I will.., I will.., but if we are being honest with ourselves, these “I wills” turn into “well I did for the first month but…” followed by a lame excuse we’ve made up to make ourselves feel better. The definition of resolution is “a firm decision to do or not do something”, so really, we can’t call it a New Year's resolution, it’s more of a New Year's intention, merely a New Year’s goal, or a New Year’s aspiration, if you will.

New Year “resolutions” never stick and here's why: they are unrealistic and self-revolving. We are not going to suddenly make time in our day to go to the gym just because it’s 2017, and we definitely aren't going to do a 180 with our meal plans just because the ball dropped. Nothing beneficial will ever happen if everyone is just focused on themselves, which is what New Year’s “resolutions” seem to be all about. In reality, it will take more than sparkling grape juice, a confetti cannon, and glasses that say 2017 to change the way you live your life.

There are hundreds of small things we can all change without having to think twice about it, things that take up no time and are not revolving around ourselves. Instead of being late to school because you promised yourself (or your mom) you would make your bed each morning, instead smile at a stranger each day. Don’t worry about how dirty your room is, worry about complimenting one person a day. Stop weighing yourself and start by saying I love you to your family before you leave in the morning. It is the small things in life that get overlooked, but it’s also the small things that need changing.

Making a difference in someone else's life is much more important than any New Year’s “resolution” we could ever make. It is amazing how small yet impactful a smile, compliment, or reminder that you love them can be to someone. Don’t wait for the New Year to change how we live because this is not a New Year resolution, this is just a resolution. Refocus this community on what is important. It is not looks, weight, or even how clean your room is, what is important is the small moments between one another that create relationships. It truly is the small things that will
make 2017, and every year to come, a great year.
