Passing the Day at SkillsUSA

By Maggie Houseman

On April 8 the top students in career and technical education across Michigan met for the SkillsUSA 2017 Michigan competition. There were over 75 career fields students could compete in. According to senior Cohen Tysee, the competition is a great way for students who don’t normally get the chance to “show the talent they have in their field.” Representing Northview at this year’s SkillsUSA State competition were seniors Arielle Bishop, Cohen Tysee, Geraldo Gonzalez, Amelia Justice and Evan Wiersma.

This year, Bishop and Gonzalez took home the silver medal in the 3-D and Visual Animation competition. As partners, Bishop and Gonzalez worked from 8am until 3pm on their given prompt. It required them to create a 30-45 second animation about a given topic and storyline. “Staring in front of a computer screen for 8 hours straight,” to create their piece was no easy feat, Bishop said. It required a lot of stamina and intelligence in 3-D and Visual Animation. Bishop and Gonzalez powered through these 8 hours and earned second place.

Also taking home second place was Cohen Tysee who competed in the Technical Drafting (a type of engineering) competition. Tysee also spent the whole day working on his assignment, where he was given an assembly (an assembled machine made up of different parts) made of the wrong parts. He had to fix the machine, not knowing which pieces were wrong. Even with the added difficulty of having to work alone, Tysee also secured his second place win.

Congratulations to all of the Northview students who competed at SkillsUSA.
