Northview’s own Boys Swim Team kicked off their season to a great start when they beat out Caledonia High School in their home meet last Tuesday, December 12th. Leading the charge was Northview junior, Caleb Eastman who swam the first leg of the of the 200-meter freestyle relay, as well as the breaststroke leg of the 200-meter medley relay. On top of those, he swam the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter breaststroke.

Caleb’s participation in four grueling events is a show of his versatility and endurance as a swimmer, but what’s more impressive than his grit and determination is that Eastman pulled through and won all four of his events.

Achieving a 1:05 in the breaststroke and a 2:13 in the individual medley, Caleb was satisfied with his times for now, but is far from the peak of his season. “Not my fastest time ever,” Eastman commented, “but it was the fastest I’ve ever gone pre-taper.” The boys typically perform better with taper, which is the process of decreasing the difficulty of practices over the week leading up to a meet in order to rest and recover.

Eastman went to the State meet last year as a sophomore in the 200-meter medley relay. To qualify for the Division 2 State as an individual this year he must swim a 1:02.79 in the 100 breaststroke and a 2:03.89 in the 200 IM. That means Eastman must drop a substantial amount of time this season to advance to the State meet in either of these two events, but he still has two months to train to reach those times as the state meet isn’t until the second weekend in March.

Looking past himself, Caleb also has high hopes for the swim team as a whole this year. In response to the team’s overall performance against Caledonia, he said, “I’m very happy. I think our team has some potential to get better.” Eastman continued by saying that the team has room to improve and he believes they can get to where they need to be by the end of the season.

Caleb mentioned that sophomore Bretin Staudacher, along with seniors Davin Baab and Pit Vollmers, all have a lot of potential and will be key team members this season.

Eastman believes the Wildcats are on track for a successful season, “I think we’re ready for whatever’s coming,” he said. Overall, the swim team is proud of their victory. This could be the start of Northview’s role as a major force within the conference this year.
