Odyssey of the Mind: The Problem Solvers of the Future

The 2017 OM team
On Friday, February 18 Northview hosted a competition for Odyssey of the Mind. Sophomores Victoria Ballor, Lauren Alsgaard, Brenna Potter, freshman Allison Norcutt, Maizee Rogers, Avery Harriger, and Crossroad’s 8th grader Calder Burton all make up the team. They are coached by Chris and Sue Potter. Balor said she joined the team to meet new people.

Odyssey of the Mind is the world’s oldest problem-solving competition which teaches kids how to think outside the box.  There are over 3,500 teams in the United States and Canada.

At competitions the team, guided by coaches, is given a problem that must be solved within 5 minutes. In addition, months before competition, teams are sent a long-term problem. To complete this, they must present a live skit at the site of the competition in which they must relate this problem to the theme, or even address this problem directly through dialogue.

This year, the problem given to Northview’s team required them to “send time travelers back into time to find out what inspired great works of art.” If a team scores high enough in the Regional competition, they go to State, then on to Worlds.

Northview won first place in their first hosted competition, they are now headed to State on Saturday, March 18.
