Wish Week

Since Make-A-Wish was created in 1980, the organization has granted over 270,000 wishes to children suffering from life-threatening illnesses in the United States. These aren’t just any wishes, they’re wishes of hope. The kids can choose from many different wish experiences such as: I Wish to Have, I Wish to Meet, I Wish to Go and I Wish to Be.

Every year during Fling week, Northview’s National Honor Society chooses a charity to support. This year, members of the NHS voted to fundraise for Make-A-Wish at their first meeting in September. In an effort to raise money, NHS and Student Council members sold Make-A-Wish accessories, blue Fling t-shirts, flower-grams and each grade competed in a change war. Through all of this, Northview was able to raise $1,500 for the foundation.

Chris Atchison, the advisor for Northview’s National Honor Society, hopes students will walk away from Wish Week with a new appreciation for their health and an awareness for childhood illnesses. To try raise excitement about Wish Week, posters were hung around school, there was an informational assembly on Monday, February 6th and also the annual Mandex game on Tuesday, February 7th after the girl’s varsity basketball game. Mandex, a volleyball game between the junior and senior boys, was the biggest part of the fundraiser this year.

Wish Week led up to a Make-A-Wish themed dance and the Fling assembly where students and staff wore their blue Fling t-shirt to support Make-A-Wish. As National Honor Society continues, members are pursuing more unique opportunities to give back, like contributing to Make-A-Wish.
