My 180 Member Family

By Jill Muraski

The Northview band program is one of the largest groups when it comes to electives and extracurricular activities. The Wildcat Marching Band proudly boasts over 180 members and continues to grow every year while several band classes are available for students to take during the year.

The band, despite its large size, acts as one giant family. The students and staff look out for each other and have a balance or working hard and having fun.

Director Greg Wells is no stranger to the band program here at Northview, after having attended this for school as a student for years.

“The attitude of the students and the desire of working together, playing together, being together, striving for excellence, it’s cool for me to see people buy into the philosophy,” Wells said.

And work together they do. The marching band is made up of twelve sections (eleven instrumental sections and the color guard) and there are three concert bands as well as the jazz band. Together, they work to create fantastic shows both on the field and on the stage.

With the recent announcement of the marching band’s 2017 season show, Letters to Literature, it is  likely that the number of marchers could increase based on the interest on the show and the amount of people coming up to the high school, adding to the already large band “family.” While this may seem daunting to those unfamiliar to band (there are already over 180 people, after all) it is good for the band, as it will help increase funds, requiring everyone in the marching band to participate.

“There’s no bench in marching band,” said Wells. “Everyone is valued, even the freshmen.”

The band program at Northview is a hardworking environment that also allows students to feel like they’re part of a team and a part of something truly special.
